About Dr. Hafkin
I am a licensed marriage counselor and a Clinical Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and hold a certificate from the Maryland Psychological Association in Conjoint (Couples) Therapy. Instrumental in founding the Stepfamily Association of America, I have conducted research, written, and lectured on the blended family since 1979. I co-wrote “The Remarried Family and Infertility” which appeared in the first edition of Infertility Counseling: A Comprehensive Handbook for Clinicians. My article, “The Difficult Former Spouse,” published in the Stepfamily Bulletin, was featured in The Washington Post and the Montgomery Gazette, and I was widely interviewed on this topic. Some typical themes for the couples who see me are: Learning about transitions to marriage, to parenthood, and to the empty nest; recognizing the myths and realities of stepfamily living; coping with ADHD in a marriage; blending different cultural backgrounds and expectations; dealing with pregnancy loss and infertility; parenting the ADHD child; infidelity; and separation and divorce. I am a member of the National Registry of Certified Group Psychotherapists and Past-President of the Mid-Atlantic Group Psychotherapy Society, where training is ongoing and experiential. I lead long-term psychotherapy groups and short term theme focused groups. I have taught group dynamics and mind-body techniques, and received advanced training in infertility at the Mind-Body Center for Women’s Health at Boston IVF. Other articles:

I have dedicated myself to the full-time practice of providing psychotherapy to individuals, couples and groups for over 35 years. I received my Doctorate in Psychology from The American University in Washington, DC. I also supervise the professional and personal growth of students of mental health.
